October 3, 1998 - Race for the Cure 5k, 1st/14:30 - A good first effort. I didn't have anyone to run with so I just went out and tried to maintain a good hard effort with out killing myself. I was rather pleased with the end result. It really shows that my fitness is a little bit better then I had previously thought. Although, the workout that I did 2 days prior had also pretty much proven that point already. The race started on an uphill for about the first 400m. I had this really weird feeling for about the first 200m. When I pushed off at the start, it felt like my left hip wasn't getting a full rotation before my leg was dropping. It really felt uncomfortable and I thought for a brief second that I might have to pull out. It worked itself out though, and was completely gone by the top of the first hill. No one even tried to go with me. I hit the first mile in 4:37, and was settling in. 2 miles was in 9:12 and I thought to myself, okay, should I go for broke and crank it for a good time or should I relax. Well, chose the latter. There was no money in the race, and seeing as though I had just run a hard workout 2 days prior, thought that I should float in. I hit 3 miles in 14:02, and really busted it the last 200m to hit the tape at 14:30. A great first "race." I'm looking at probably running a 15k next and will then run the Vulcan 10k in Birmingham, AL in early November.
October 31, 1998 - Northfest 15k, Huntersville, NC, 1st/46:19 - A new NC State Record, breaking the record I set last year by 3 seconds. Was pretty pleased with this race overall in that I didn't every really feel good, but was able to rise to the challenge and come home with a new record. I had a lot more competition this year then last. Pat Phillips, who used to run for Wake Forest and now for Nike East, showed up fresh from running on the U.S. 1/2 Marathon team that competed in Switzerland last month. I felt like he'd be the one to beat. At the start, we went out fairly conservatively (5:13) and I kind've felt like everyone was keying off of me. I didn't want to be the marked man, so just after the mile I put the breaks on and forced people around me. At that point, Pat went to the lead and started pressing some. We ran the next mile in 5:02 (10:15) and then hit 5k in about 15:36 (4:48 3rd mile). Just after the 5k, a lady who wasn't paying attention almost pulled out into us. I yelled at her, and then yelled at the cop who was walking up toward the intersection to hurry up and get there. I was pissed and I guess that got my adrenaline going, because the next thing I knew was that I'd opened up about 10 seconds on Pat Phillips and Eric Ashton. I hadn't really wanted to try and break that early, but I was committed to it so I just tried to keep pushing the tempo. I continued to run sub 5 minute miles, but wasn't able to really break it open until miles 7 1/2. I felt bad the whole race, and there were several times that I thought I was going to get caught and have to tuck back in and hope to kick. I caught a cramp in my abdomen at about 6.5 miles (10k 30:53) but was able to shake it by mile 8. I started feeling good and really pushed the last mile (4:42) to break the record. I ended up winning by 20 seconds.
November 7, 1998 - Viva Health Vulcan 10k, Birmingham, AL, 2nd/29:37 - Awesome race! I'm psyched because I ran really well, actually even better then I'd thought I would. The field was pretty loaded. The cast included top American runners Eric Polonski, Scott Strand, Stewart Ellington, John Tuttle, Carolos Gibbs, and top international runners Cormac Finnerty of Ireland, Cleophus Boor (Kenya), Julius Rotich (Kenya), Jared Segera (Kenya), and Levis Anyega (Kenya). The morning of the race it was pretty cold, which was good for me. I tend to run well in cold weather if I'm properly warmed up. When the gun when off, Scott Strand, the '97 winner and 2nd place finisher at the US 10k National Road Champs in Bowling Green, shot to the front and immediately opened up about 3 seconds on the rest of us. We all were content to let him run out in the front alone. We hit the mile in 4:35 to his 4:32, and then 5 of us (Finnerty, Segera, Tuttle, myself, and Polonski) bridged the gap, and caught him. Polonski didn't hang on for long, and then it was just 5 of us. I missed the 2 mile split, but we hit 4 miles in about 14:14. Just before 4 miles, Segera dropped out the back door. We had begun to make the long climb up toward Highland Avenue, and shortly after, Cormac Finnerty made a strong move to the front and began to really tight the thumbscrews. That strung things out a little as he opened about 15 meters on Strand and Tuttle and they about 15 meters on me. I bided my time, and at about 4.5 miles I caught Strand who was struggling with a stomach cramp and then caught Tuttle at the top of the hill. Once you crest the hill, it's a long downhill shot to the finish. I was really trying to open up on the downhill and was using my long legs for all they were worth. I managed to close a little on Cormac, but not enough to make it a good race to the finish. I was pleased though. My goal coming into this race was to 1.) Be competitive and 2.) Shoot for 4:40's. Well, I achieve both, so I'm pleased. That and the $600 I picked up for 2nd.
