This camp got together some of the United States most up and coming distance runners for the purpose of testing the effects on athletic performance of living at a high altiude (8,000ft) and training at a somewhat low altitude (4,000ft). The theory being that by living high, and training low, the body gets the positive effects of high altitude (increased red blood cells), without the taxation that training at high altitude brings upon the body. Here's how the 5 weeks went. I hope you have time, cause there's a lot of information here. Enjoy!
It all began the day after USATF Nationals in Indianapolis, IN. We spent a few days in Bloomington, IN where each of us underwent extensive VO2 Max testing and pulminary testing, and then ran a 3000m time trial the day before we left for Utah. Because of time constraints, some of us took the VO2 Max test the day before our 3000m time trial, but I don't think it affected us to badly. The next day, rather early in the morning, we left for the airport and then on to Salt Lake City, and our final destination, Park City, UT. This would be our home for the next 3 1/2 weeks. We stayed at the Deer Valley Resort, and were split up into 6 Condos. My group of Dan Middleman, Scott Strand, Rob Cook, Jim Sorensen, Gary Stoltz and myself made out with the best condo. It was right at the base of the mountain which is going to be used for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games for skiing and the view from our porch was incredible, not to mention the hot tub. Needless to say, we had a lot of free time on our hands. What I've added here is just the basics of what the camp was all about. I hope to add more infomation about what went on as time allows. I wanted to go ahead and get something online, as I have bee receive a lot of inquiries about the camp with people wanting to know. I know its been slow coming and I appreciate everyones patience.
